Review ~ Love, Lex by Avery Aster

Love, Lex (The Undergrad Years, #1)Title: Love, Lex
Author: Avery Aster
Series: The Undergrad Years #1
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
Published: April 14th 2014

This summer, I’d planned to celebrate my eighteenth birthday in Europe with my fellow Manhattanites—Taddy Brill, Blake Morgan, and Vive Farnworth—until I caught my boyfriend screwing my mother. According to the police report, this vomit-inducing incident happened around the same time I’d supposedly blown-up my mother’s penthouse. Like I’m walking around Soho with a stick of dynamite in my Louis Vuitton purse—not! Now, my besties and I are in jail.

Officer Ford Gotti, the Harley-wheelin’ biker cop who arrested us, keeps sticking his perfectly-sculpted nose into my case. His inked body is jacked like a superhero, and he says I can trust him. He wants me to fess up. I won’t. Not again. Why should I? My friends and I had a previous stint in juvie that nearly destroyed us. I gotta protect them and keep my mouth shut. Right? —Lex Easton, women’s studies major, motorcycle enthusiast, and virgin.

The Undergrad Years is a New Adult contemporary miniseries about first loves, independence, and everlasting friendships.

Love, Lex was a quick read that I devoured in a few short hours. It is a good introduction to the series and I got a lot of information about these four friends. Love, Lex is Alexandria's story, and how one day changed her life.

Lex has had a difficult life, being the overweight daughter of world famous singers. She is starting to feel good about herself and is excited about her birthday, going on a trip with her friends, boyfriend and losing the big V. A situation at her mother’s changes her plans and her friends come to her rescue. One thing leads to another and she is being pulled over by a sexy cop and the three of them land in jail.

I enjoyed the storyline in this book but I felt there was too much inner dialogue at times, and I often skimmed parts to get into the conversation. Lex revealed a lot of her past with the inner dialogue, but I really wanted her to get to the point. She seems to get swept away in her thoughts and has fantasies that seem to go for too long. It was nice to see she had good friends to rely on, but when they were in jail things weren't as smooth as I'd hoped. I got a little frustrated with Vive; they have been through so much in the years they knew each other and she nearly flipped out. I liked how she had a connection with Ford – the cop, and he saw past the curvy girl she is, to the broken girl who had her world turned upside down in a day. I felt their relationship moved a little too quickly and then the ending felt rushed too. However, I did enjoy the story and I would like to see how things go for the rest of Lex’s friends.

  2. I just so dislike reading a book and you have to skim it... Though this one does seem like an okay read, I'm not too sure it's for me. BUT I just loved your review and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  3. lol wtf, it sounds crazy from the blurb. Ah, but it does get annoying when the inner dialogue rambles.

  5. It was ok, but yeah, skimming annoys me. I have a friend who enjoyed it more, could be just me.

  7. Well, I'm glad you liked it overall, Naomi. I understand what you're saying about Lex's fantasies...and Vive made me mad during their jail stay as well. I think the Sex in the City feel and having read about them as adults is why I liked it a little more. (.5 worth) It's over the top for sure. I'm glad you gave it a try. :)

  8. Hmmm ... That's interesting. I don't know if I can handle reading books out of order! For now I have so many books to read that this one will probably be put on the back burner for a while anyway. We shall see ...

  11. It's an ok read, but Brandee thinks it's better if you've read the next book first.
