Review – Marked for Vengeance by S.J. Pierce

Title: Marked for Vengeance
Author: S.J. Pierce
Series: Alyx Rayer Chronicles #1
Genre: Paranormal
Published: October 10th 2012

Book Description

Alyx Rayer’s existence in Atlanta, the eternally bustling capital of Georgia, is one of routine and blending in among the worker bees. But her ‘normal’ life is actually a façade for a higher calling; she's a three hundred year old soul, encased in a human vessel and sent from the darkness between heaven and Earth to capture her Marked when summoned by her superiors.

During the initial, routine stake-out of her Marked, a dream prophet named Isaac Walsh, Alyx is thrown for an emotional loop when his allure captivates her heart from two rooftops away. The event marks the very instance when her sense of what’s right and what’s wrong is brutally challenged as her contact with him is strictly forbidden.

While already trapped between honor and desire, her emotional struggles are further challenged by a man in a black suit who continually pops up when she least expects it, his presence evoking a strange response from the scar she was branded with at birth. The scar tingles like a warning beacon, alerting her that something is amiss. Because her superiors never told her what this would mean, or much of anything except what to do when they summon, she can only conclude to try and keep her sanity, and her life, from completely shattering to pieces.

This engaging first book of the series is a Paranormal Romance novel interlaced with twists, turns, and thrilling suspense that is sure to satisfy readers of any genre.

May not be suitable for YA.

My Review

Wow!! What an awesome beginning to a new series! Marked for Vengeance is a mysterious read, where the facts take time to get to the surface. I thought that it was a highly entertaining read and loved the authors writing style. She was able to captivate me and keep me guessing!

Aylx is beginning her third and final life on earth to protect her marked human. Her lifespan is determined by her Marked, if he dies, she dies too. So she must ensure his safety. Alyx is a genuine person who cares about those who are close to her. Her best friend Cinder is a great constant in her life. Her job keeps her grounded and occupied while she waits until she is called for service.

Isaac has mysterious dreams and turns his dreams into artwork as he is a very gifted painter. He is a single dad and works a second job at the local diner to support them both. His only priorities are the lives of himself and his son. However the Dark Angel in his paintings is occupying his thoughts more often lately.

I was able to see the connection that they had but Alyx knows what the rules are and therefore won't act upon her feelings. She tries to find comfort in the arms of another man, but it doesn't do enough to quench her desire. Isaac doesn't understand why he is drawn to the dark haired beauty, but decides to pursue her any way.

I enjoyed the mystery behind Alyx's quest. We don't find out all the details until late into the book and I was often speculating how the plot was going to go. The way the plot gradually built was highly entertaining and we were kept in the dark about the details of both Alyx and Isaac. Marked by Vengeance was a fabulous beginning to the series, but the real action is about to begin.....

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Hmmm. Interesting. This is not normally a book I would pick up. But I'm starting to think I might check it out. I love when a book can actually keep you guessing, not knowing its secrets. That's really difficult to do, in my opinion. Great review, Naomi :) I'm looking forward to seeing more about this book! And I love the cover with the softness of the moth on the hard lines of the knot. Very cool :)
