The Blurb

In 9th century France, 18-year old Cherine Cadet only knows one thing: that the life of a peasant isn’t a life at all. Tired of working in utter poverty for an unfeeling Lord, with only her indifferent family and love-struck best friend as company, Cherine dreams of the day she can run away from the future set-up for her, even if she knows there’s no real escape from her destiny.

Then, in one brutal instance, everything changes. A Viking fleet led by the powerful nobleman and warrior, Rolf the Walker and his right-hand man, Erik the Axe, arrive on the shores of the Lord’s estate. In minutes, the entire land is up in flames, Cherine’s family and fellow serfs are killed, and Cherine comes dangerously close to death herself. She is saved only by the fierce Erik – but a new lease on life comes with a cost.

Cherine becomes a slave to the Vikings, a fate she thinks is no better than the one she had before. But as she finds herself being shared between the two men, the savage and darkly handsome Rolf and the mysterious and sensual Erik, Cherine discovers that she too has a fiery warrior heart and that the flames that consumed her old life might burn them all to the ground.

Excerpt

The man stopped right in front of Erik and Cherine and though part of her was afraid to meet this giant’s eye, she was so enthralled by the man, by this beast, that she couldn’t help it. He was, no doubt, this Rolf that Erik had mentioned. His power seemed to leak through his tanned skin as he commanded everyone’s attention with his presence.

“You must be Cherine,” Rolf addressed her in fluent French that rolled easily off his tongue. He gave her a smile that made her feel weak at the knees. Rolf was a stunning man with captivatingly dark eyes that twinkled playfully and a broad mouth bordering on a perpetual smirk. She thought he looked like he was always in on some joke and it contrasted against the deep, red scar that carved down the side of his golden face. He was also all male, from his dark beard and exceptionally broad chest down to the size of his hands as they clasped around hers.

He lifted her bound hands to his mouth and planted a firm kiss on both her knuckles. While Erik had a fire burning away in the back of his soul, she could see Rolf was just smoldering in every way possible.

“It is a pleasure to have you here,” he said, lowering her hands but still holding on. “I trust my boy Erik has been taking great care of you.”

Somewhere in the back of Cherine’s mind she remembered that the only reason Erik was taking care of her was because this man ordered his Vikings to slaughter her family. She gave Rolf only a faint smile and attempted to compose herself.

There was a gleam in Rolf’s eye as he studied her change in posture.

“Is my French too hard for you to understand?” he asked, finally letting go of her.  Her hands tingled without his warm fingers and she snatched them back to the front of her dress.

She raised her head proudly. “It is acceptable. However, the fact that I am being kept prisoner here, is not.”

Erik’s hands sunk further into her arm. Rolf eyed him in amusement then brought his penetrating gaze back to her. “You’ll learn to love it, Cherine…”

“Cadet,” she filled in. She looked down at the floor.

“Ah, Cherine Cadet. Beautiful name for a beautiful lady. And don’t you want to know who I am?” he asked and she caught an edge to his voice that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand. He pushed her chin up and forced her to meet his eyes again. They sparked with unpredictability.

“You are Rolf,” she answered.

“I am Rolf the Walker, son of Rongvald, the Earl of Møre,” he announced, louder now, as if he was also reminding his men. “Do you know why the call me Rolf the Walker?”

She shook her head. His fingers traced the edge of her chin.

“I am so large, very few horses can carry me. I used to walk instead of ride. Do you think you’d break if I rode you?”

She jerked away from his touch at that comment and felt a wash of fear go down her back.

He grinned, pleased at her discomfort. “I am saying this in jest, my beauty.”

What an excerpt!! I actually had two excepts to choose from.... The other one was REALLY steamy!! I hope you liked this excerpt, I know I did!!

Author bio

Emma MacKenzie is the alter ego of a somewhat successful indie author. Though she tries hard to hide it, the truth is she got her start in writing by penning cheesy romantic comedy screenplays. Though she has seven published novels under her garter belt, this is her first foray into erotic romance. Considering how big of a pervert she is, it probably won't be her last.
