Review ~ Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris

Dead Ever After (Sookie Stackhouse, #13)Title: Dead Ever After
Author: Charlaine Harris
Series: Sookie Stackhouse #12
Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy
Published: May 7th 2013

Sookie Stackhouse has one last adventure in store.

Life has taken her from a waitress in Merlotte’s Bar, Bon Temps, to part owner; from social outcast to the heart of her community; from a vampire’s girlfriend to the wife of one of the most powerful vampires in the state. She has survived earthquakes, revolutions and attempts on her life. Sookie has endured betrayal, heartbreak and grief . . . and she has emerged a little stronger, and little wiser, every time.

But with life comes new trials . . .

The question is, in the end: who will love, who will live, and who will be dead ever after?

Sookie finds it easy to turn down the request of former barmaid Arlene when she wants her job back at Merlotte’s. After all, Arlene tried to have Sookie killed. But her relationship with Eric Northman is not so clearcut. He and his vampires are keeping their distance…and a cold silence. And when Sookie learns the reason why, she is devastated. Then a shocking murder rocks Bon Temps, and Sookie is arrested for the crime. But the evidence against Sookie is weak, and she makes bail. Investigating the killing, she’ll learn that what passes for truth in Bon Temps is only a convenient lie. What passes for justice is more spilled blood. And what passes for love is never enough...
After reading 12 books in this series and feeling that the final book was going to redeem the last few, by the time I finished Dead Ever After I was left a little disappointed. Sookie has been on some amazing adventures, been in some life threatening situations and that occurred in this book too. But I hoped there would be a big revelation as to her love life, but in the end, it was a bit of a disappointment.

Sookie is trying to continue with her life as normal as possible. Things between her and the vampire world are strained and her life is being threatened. There are big changes in Vampire politics and she is glad that she is not directly in the mix anymore. She has a lot of visitors that are on team Sookie and supporting her in every possible way.

She is still not her bubbly self, but she is under a lot of pressure. She learns who her real friends are. She has some time to figure out what she wants in life and all of the men that have influenced her life throughout this series make appearances in this book. I was not sure which direction she would go in regards to her love life, and I remember thinking I hope it's not…

This book was written differently than the other books. It is mostly from Sookies POV, but we also get told a few events written in the 3rd person. It does help in filling some gaps of why things are going in the direction they were.

There is so much I wished happened… I wanted a Big Bang to the series, I wanted her with other people, but alas, it was not my story to tell. I am happy that Sookie was left making her own decisions and has her close friends for support. But it wasn’t what I wanted. It was a nice end to the series, I’m glad I read it to the end and Sookie is able to make a future for herself.

  1. This is actually one series I think became a little different after the TV show started. Sookie's personality in the books changed a little at first, like she needed to fit with TV-Sookie, do you know what I mean?
I still enjoyed this ending though, and it felt like the whole story was one big goodbye.
    Great review, Naomi :)

  10. I did, which was good and you can see how much Sookie has changed as a person. But I was sitting there thinking, it better not go that way.... sigh, oh well!!
