Naomi’s Weekly Wrap Up 138

My template was modified this week, and something happened with Disqus, so it was re installed and I lost a lot of my comments, so as of Friday afternoon I was told to contact support and hopefully they can fix it… fingers crossed!

Other than that, life is normal, running around after the kiddos and taking my oldest to cross country… where she came second! Not bad for a 10 year old! Off to the zone comp in June!!

Defeated but not vanquished, the foes of light have retreated. But victory came at a terrible cost to Elora Walker, with her friends lost and scattered. Eleven months later and just seventeen, she commands her own Vanguard quad but struggles with a past that won’t release her and a future she hesitates to embrace.

The barriers between worlds continues to weaken, Dark Seekers are emboldened, and David still plans to engulf humanity in eternal night. Elora means to end the threat once and for all but dreads the personal consequences. Will saving the world demand the ultimate sacrifice? And who must pay it?

I thought that, with this being book three, it might be a good idea to introduce you a little to Elora’s new world and the new cast of characters in her life. The main events of Fated take place almost a year after the conclusion of Reflected, and a lot has changed for Elora. Now an active Vanguard, she is finally living an ‘ordinary’ life—you know, aside from the mind-reading and exceptional speed, strength and senses!  Enjoy!

My back slammed into the red brick wall, and a hot breath rushed out of me. Gasping, my eyes flickered shut for a second before I felt myself rise again. Cold, hard hands gripped my neck and lifted me until my face was level with a pair of menacing, soulless black eyes. I didn’t wriggle or squirm, not that I didn’t want to, but the hold the vampire had on my neck was choking the life out of me. Pushing out with my mind, I tried to find my back-up. Where on the Spirits was the rest of my quad?
My quad, however, seemed oddly absent, and I felt my heart beat grow a little more frantic—and probably more delicious-sounding considering my current company. Desperate now, I swung my legs up hard and punched my feet into the centre of the vampire’s chest. A dead thud reverberated through me. He snarled derisively while I pushed against him, trying to force him to release his grip on my throat. One shove, another. The third time, I summoned all of the Vanguard strength I had in me.
I caught the smug creature off-guard—my short stature often led my enemies into a false sense of security. His grasp loosened for a fraction of a second and I twisted away, both of us falling in a tangled heap on the floor while I gasped for breath. I scrambled away, the dirt from the alley pushing up under my fingernails as I skittered backwards. The vampire moved fast, and I was unable to put any real distance between us before his shadow loomed above me.
I cast my eyes towards the shadow, trying to anticipate the creature’s next move. It was not the vampire but my quadmate and commander, Marcus. He held his finger to his lips and I listened inside instead.
“The rest of the quad are behind you, Elora,” came Marcus’ calm, calculating voice. “We need to draw him that way if we’re going to take him alive.” This steady-in-the-face-of-danger attitude was something I had come to expect of Marcus during the last few months, and so I nodded, the panic fading as quickly as it had come.
Marcus slipped back behind a portion of the wall and continued his commands, relying on me to pass them around the quad. This was what I did, after all—human telephone. A sudden lump rose into my throat as the phrase fluttered through my brain, my assigned Vanguard Superior had coined it and he had died a little over six months ago whilst trying to protect me. He was an honourable man. I had trusted him and he had believed in me. It still hurt that he was gone. I had little time to think about it, though; the vampire had hold of my ankle and was slowly lifting me up. The tendons in my ankle popped, straining against my weight. My short, auburn hair slipped from its ponytail as I was lifted completely off the ground.
“They sent a little girl for me?” laughed a dry voice. We had reached the obligatory ‘just before you die’ gloating, and I steeled myself for the usual barrage of taunts and mockery. “Did they really think you would be able to take me down?” the vampire continued. I squirmed a little, making it look good. I knew the others were about to make their move and I was waiting as patiently as I could. “Little girl, I am Ramos. I have been alive probably ten times your lifespan! How dare you think you can kill me?” It was clear that Ramos needed this to be a two-way affair, so I joined in—if only to shut him up.
“Maybe I just look good for my age?” I coughed. It turned out it was difficult to speak when suspended upside down.
Marcus whispered to me that it was probably best not to antagonise the monster any more, but it was a little late for that.
“Good for your . . . ha!” Ramos mocked. “The lack of marks on your uniform show me just how little you are, girl.” The silver flecks on my sleeve were on the sparse side—but I was still new, really, so twelve was pretty good. With a sudden surge, the vampire wrenched me up and around, spinning me so that he once again gripped my neck rather than my ankle. Then he whispered darkly, “I think I will drink you slowly, painfully. Punishment for your arrogance.”
“Now would be a great time to perform your daring rescue!” I urged my quadmates silently. I saw them about the same time as Ramos heard them. They slipped in from three sides and completely surrounded him, like moths to a flame. His grip tightened on my neck for a moment and then he lowered me. Turning slowly, he looked to each of my team in turn. He was no doubt realising that I was the very junior of juniors when it came to Vanguards, and that my quad most definitely were not.
Marcus had his arms folded loosely across his chest. His forearms glistened in the faint orange glow from the distant streetlights. He had many more kills and captures to his name and he was not alone. Simon had an equally glittering past. Finally, Maria, who had been here only six months longer than I, certainly had her fair share.
“Well, well! I see this has become more of a banquet than a snack!” Ramos ran his tongue slowly over his teeth as if to prove his point. All at once, I lashed out with my foot, striking him in the back of the head and nudging him forward. Simon and Maria each grabbed an arm, and Marcus pushed his iron stake firmly through Ramos’ heart. He gasped a chalky breath before disintegrating gently into a fine grey powder. He really never saw it coming, how would he when the signal was invisible?

Jake Undone by Penelope Ward ~ Review & Swoon Thursday

After reading Jake Undone, Penelope Ward has now cemented herself as one of my MUST-READ authors!! She builds fantastic worlds and characters that you cannot get enough of!

Nina Kennedy was alive…but not living…until she met him.

Planes, trains, heights…you name it, Nina was afraid of it and led a sheltered life ruled by irrational fears and phobias. When she moves to Brooklyn for nursing school, that life is turned upside down, as she develops an intense but unwanted attraction to her gorgeous roommate, who’s pierced, tattooed and just happens to be the smartest person she’s ever met.

Behind Jake Green’s rough exterior and devilish smile, lies a heart of gold. He makes it his mission to change Nina’s outlook on life. When he agrees to tutor her, they forge a bet and the stakes are high as Jake forces Nina to face her demons. He just wasn’t expecting to fall hard for her in the process.

What Nina doesn’t realize, is that Jake has been living his own private hell. Once he drops a bombshell, will their love survive it?

Told in two parts from both Nina and Jake’s points of view, Jake Undone is a standalone story and a companion to the novel, Gemini.

Sigh… I loved this book! It was a beautiful read about two characters that were a little lost and didn’t realise that they needed someone special in their lives.

Nina moved to New York to study to become a nurse. She found a place to live with her brother’s best friend, Ryan, who is like family to her, and his two roommates, Jake and Tarah. The chemistry between Jake and Nina builds slowly throughout the book as Jake tutors Nina in her math and even helps her with her fears.

Jake may seem like a bad boy, with the tatts, piercings and sexy body, but he is an engineer, with a kind soul. The more I got to know him, the more I loved him! He goes out of his way to help Nina, but I could see he was keeping some secrets. When I found out what those were, it showed how good of a person he was and boy did I swoon over him!!

I loved how the relationship built between these two, they formed a comfortable friendship at first, and the romance and passion came later. There were a few hurdles along the way, and they both struggled and found it hard to fight for one another.

This is the second book of Penelope Ward’s that I have read and I love how she can sweep me away in her worlds. Her characters seem like real people and deal with issues that affect people every day. I love how I got a good glimpse into the future for Jake and Nina too, and saw again that things are not always perfect. It was a fitting wrap up to Jake Undone!!

“You’re the first thing I think about in the morning and the last thing I think about at night. And then, you invade my thoughts and dreams in between. I have tried so hard to stop these feelings. I have put up as many barriers as I could stand to, but they are crumbling down. I can’t do it anymore.” He placed his mouth on me whispering into my neck huskily, “I can’t do it anymore…I can’t do it anymore…I can’t do it anymore.” His hands moved slowly down my sides gripping my hips, and his lips moved over mine when he said, “I’ve come undone.”

Amber Smoke (The Escaped #1)
Title: Amber Smoke
Author: Kristin Cast
Series: The Escaped #1
Genre: NA Fantasy
Expected Publication: June 9th 2015

There is a world that runs parallel to our own, a world in which the souls of the damned are caged, where they are looked over by the Furies, and where they spend eternity in torment, mirroring the devastation and mayhem they created when alive.

Someone has opened the cage.

The worst of terrors has crossed the barrier that separates our world from theirs, and the Furies send a great, albeit untested warrior—their only son, Alek—to try to bring those souls back. He is young and handsome, headstrong and impulsive, and he won’t be able to do it alone.

Eva has grown up, beautiful and beloved, but surrounded by secrets. First, she will be hunted in an ancient feud that will threaten her life. Then, she will become the hunter.

With the police closing in and two worlds on the verge of crumbling around them, Alek and Eva must find each other, discover the limits of their powers, and work together to save everything they hold dear, including one another. Blending elements of mythology with the dazzling storytelling that her fans have devoured through the House of Night series, Kristin Cast weaves a spellbinding and passionate tale that starts a thrilling new series with an explosive charge.

Beautiful Player by Christina Lauren ~ Review & Teaser Tuesday

Last month I reviewed Beautiful Secret, but before I read it, I read Beautiful Player first, but I wasn't able to schedule my review until now. Here it is, I hope you are able to try this series for yourself!!

A bombshell bookworm. A chronic Casanova. And a lesson in chemistry too scandalous for school.

When Hanna Bergstrom receives a lecture from her overprotective brother about neglecting her social life and burying herself in grad school, she’s determined to tackle his implied assignment: get out, make friends, start dating. And who better to turn her into the sultry siren every man wants than her brother’s gorgeous best friend, Will Sumner, venture capitalist and unapologetic playboy?

Will takes risks for a living, but he’s skeptical about this challenge of Hanna’s…until the wild night his innocently seductive pupil tempts him into bed- and teaches him a thing or two about being with a woman he can’t forget. Now that Hanna’s discovered the power of her own sex appeal, it’s up to Will to prove he’s the only man she’ll ever need.

Ahhh… Will the player finally got his own book, and he happened to fall for the youngest sister of his oldest friend … how fitting! Will became friends with Jensen when they went to college when he was 19. Jensen invited him home and that is when a 12 year old Hanna first laid eyes on him. Since then she has watched him with all the girls and he often starred in her fantasies. Now Hanna is 24, and although she is smart, she is kind of withdrawn from the normal world and obsessed with her work. Jensen makes Hanna call Will, to get her build herself a social life.

This was a very amusing read, I tell you!! Hanna was very open in what she was thinking; she didn’t have a filter, mostly, and wasn’t afraid to ask all the sexual questions that she wanted to know about. She has had limited experience with men and expected Will to teach her all that he knows about dating and sex!

Will has always given Bennett and Max a hard time about their women, so it was funny to see karma kick him in the butt!! He has always kept things simple with women, and they know what to expect from him. Seeing the connection between Will and Hanna become something more made him realise that his simple life may not be as perfect as he thought. He spent a lot of time with Hanna, getting to know her as more than Jensen’s sister. They shared a lot of interests, and going jogging was one they (eventually) enjoyed together.

Christina Lauren showed me once again how incredible they are in the romance genre. Will and Hanna had their flaws and found it hard to voice their feelings to one another, even though the chemistry was there right from the beginning. They flirted, spent a lot of time together and the slight touches built the tension between them. I liked how Bennett and Max made a couple of appearances too, and unsettled both Will and Hanna, giving the guys ammunition to use against Will for a change!! Beautiful Player was another fantastic read and I am keen to get more from this world!

Sighing, I stood and walked over to where I’d left my shoes near the front door. “Okay, fine, I’ll come. But wear a shirt that shows off your tits so I have something to entertain me if I get bored.”

Flirting with Scandal by Chanel Cleeton ~ Review, Giveaway & Quote-tastic

It's Release Day for Chanel Cleeton's new Capital Confessions series!! Yes, the first book Flirting with Scandal is release today and I cannot wait for you all to meet Jackie and Will...

Title: Flirting with Scandal
Author: Chanel Cleeton
Series: Capital Confessions #1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Published: May 19th 2015

Google Play / iBooks / Kobo / Penguin

The author of I See London sets her sights on Washington, D. C., with a sexy new series about three sisters, the secrets they keep, and a powerful blog with a knack for exposing scandals...

Jackie Gardner knows all about dirty little secrets. The illegitimate daughter of one of the most influential senators in Washington, D.C., she grew up surrounded by the scandals and shadows of politics. Now that she's landed an internship with a powerful political consulting firm, she's determined to launch her career and take this city by storm.

William Andrew Clayton was born for politics. He knows the drill: work hard, play discreetly, and at all costs, avoid scandal. At twenty-six, his campaign for the Virginia State Senate is the first step to cementing his future. It's time for him to settle down, to find the perfect political spouse. He needs a Jackie Kennedy, not a Marilyn...

When Jackie meets Will in the bar of the Hay-Adams Hotel, sparks fly. But the last thing Will needs is to be caught in a compromising position, and an affair with a political candidate could cost Jackie her career. When what began as one steamy night, becomes a passion neither one of them can walk way from, they must decide if what they have is really love, or just another dirty little secret...

Flirting with Scandal was a fun read and a great introduction into Chanel Cleeton’s new political romance series. She showed us what could happen when a young politician who is running for the seat of Virginia falls for a girl who has a complicated past. I really enjoyed this concept and the few twists that were thrown in too. It was a scandalous read that is for sure!

Jackie and Will hit it off from the moment their eyes met across the bar... It was all hot and heavy until Jackie sees something that shatters the moment, and she hi-tails it out of there. But the next day they are pushed together as Jackie is tasked to work on Will’s campaign. They both need to find a way to put the moment aside and work together without jeopardising their professional lives.

Jackie is only 21 and still has a lot to learn, but has a natural instinct when it comes to politics, because of how she grew up. She has a few issues in her past that can wreck a political campaign. She is a confident, pretty and smart girl, who is not afraid of a challenge. Will is the perfect politician, he is 26, single and every girls dream. He is the sweetest guy and chased after Jackie because he knew what he wanted regardless of her keeping secrets from him.

These two had amazing chemistry and they found it hard not to tear each other’s clothes off all the time. They were mostly good at work, and saved most of their sexcapades for behind closed doors, but being in the world of politics there is always a slip up and a scandal set to shock the world.

This was a fun first book in the series and I enjoyed the introductions into some of the other characters in this world: Mitch was always watching and I really liked Blair. Each chapter begins with a snippet from a political blog and I liked how that aspect tied into the overall story and both of their lives.  The writing was done well and I never found the story line to lack in any way, I was eagerly flicking the pages to see what would happen between them. There were so many good moments in this book and I highlighted so many lines! The duel pov's gave me greater insight into their conflicting thoughts and what they wanted from their complicated relationship. I am looking forward to the next book and being able to learn more about Blair.

“I don’t want you to think I’m the guy who preys on unsuspecting females at work, or that I’m some sleazy politician using his career to get laid. I mean yes, I absolutely want to have sex with you, but I want it to be because you want it, and not because—”
“Will?”
God, I kept losing my fucking mind around her. She had to think I was an idiot. “Yeah?”
“Shut up and kiss me.”

Kindle Arc Loc 635

“When I enter a room now I look for you before I do anything else. And if you’re not there, I wonder where you are, and what you’re doing, and even though I’m not supposed to admit it, part of me wishes I were with you. And when you are there, I can’t take my gaze off of you.

Now, a happily ever after later, Chanel is living her next adventure. Law school made Chanel realize she’d rather spend her days writing sexy stories than in a courtroom, and she hasn’t looked back since. An avid reader and hopeless romantic, she’s happiest curled up with a book. She has a weakness for handbags, her three pups, and her husband.
