A scarred fighter.
A girl with rules.
One night of unbridled passion.

There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Bennett: she’s smart as a whip, always in control, and lives by a set of carefully crafted rules. She’s learned the hard way that people you love the most always hurt you in the end.

But then she meets Declan Blay, the new neighbor at her apartment complex.

A tattooed British street fighter, he’s the campus bad boy she’s supposed to avoid, but when he saves her from a frat party gone bad, all her rules about sex and love fly out the window.

She gives him one night of unbridled passion, but he longs for more.

With only a cardboard-thin wall separating their bedrooms, he dreams of possessing the vulnerable girl next door forever.

One night. Two damaged hearts. The passion of a lifetime.

*a modern love story inspired by Pride and Prejudice*

Ok Ladies! You need to meet Declan Blay – the Tattooed and scarred fighter that stars in Ilsa Madden-Mills latest release, Dirty English. He’s the total opposite to his appearance: smart, kind and thoughtful. He also carries so much on his shoulders, looks out for his brother and has suffered the loss of the most important woman in his life. The relationship with his father is strained and he has no intention in following his father’s plans for his future. He wants to break into the UFC and open his own gym. Did I mention that he has a British accent? Well, he sounds perfect, doesn’t he?

Elizabeth’s story began in the prologue, which broke my heart. That type of thing is damaging and not acceptable! I hoped that she would grow from it, but it was sad to see that it still settled heavily on her two years later. Yes, she was broken and now she’s a structured girl who did everything by her own rules, that way she wouldn’t be hurt that badly again. She guarded her heart and her past, and her two best friends are the only ones who knew what happened. When she met Declan, she was drawn to him and slowly she felt the urge to let him into her life.

Elizabeth and Declan were attracted to each other from the beginning, but I could see that they were both struggling with their hearts and their heads in regards to their feelings for one another. They both had demons in their pasts, and Elizabeth’s demons, in particular, came back to haunt her. Declan kind of broke my heart, thinking that he’s not good enough for Elizabeth, but would put himself out there for her, even if she didn’t return his feelings at first. I was really cranky at Elizabeth at times though, because she couldn’t see how good Declan was for her.

Dirty English was a bit of an emotional read as I watched the characters struggle with their damaged pasts. Neither of them were looking for a relationship, but after spending time together they become comfortable with one another and let down their walls. Their sexual relationship is hot and entwines them closer together. I liked how it all tied up, and some relationships took a turn for the better. Ilsa Madden-Mills, this was a great introduction to new characters and a fun world… Dax better get his own book next!

This was a beautiful moment when Declan was looking at Elizabeth's scars... sigh...

“I noticed them the night I showed you how to punch, but I didn’t say anything. I’m sorry for your pain,” he said, gazing down at the pink skin. “Your scars are beautiful. It means you survived. It means you’re here with me.” He kissed my wrist. Light as a feather. “It’s my favorite part of you.”
