In a sprint, every millisecond counts.
When you’re waiting for love, those milliseconds can feel like eons.

High school senior Lucas Preston has it all: star of the track team, a scholarship waiting for him, an apartment to himself and a revolving door of girlfriends. He also has an older sister, five younger brothers and a father who relies on him to make sure those brothers don’t kill each other.
His saving grace? Lois “Laney” Sanders, a girl he started to fall in like with when he was just eleven.
A girl who became his best friend, his confidant, his courage.

It took only sixteen clicks and eight seconds for Lucas to realize that his like for Laney had turned into love.
Eight life-changing seconds.
It’s also the exact length of time it took to lose her.

I love the way that Jay McLean sucks me into this world when I pick up any book related to it! She creates flawed characters that make mistakes, fight against their feelings, and go through a lot of heartache. But she showed me in Lucas that despite everything, if your love for one another is strong enough, it will survive the test of time!

Lucas and Lois (Laney) have been friends since they met when they were eleven. Laney and her father became an extended part of the Preston family, and over the years the secretly harboured feelings for one another. As the book alternated between the past and present in the beginning, I was able to see how their relationship began and how close they became.

But not everything is smooth sailing for the Preston family and they faced some hard times together. Lucas leaned on Laney in those times and they both opened up to one another, and became even closer, but neither of them overstepped any boundaries. And just like any teenage relationship, it was difficult for Laney to watch Lucas date. Lucas was in denial of his feelings, and would be a little mean to her to confuse their relationship even more.

This book broke my heart a number of times, seeing Lucas and Laney struggling to get onto the same path together, knowing they were meant to be. Just when I thought things were going to work out, twist after twist was thrown in and my heart cracked further. It saddened me to see Laney withdrawing into herself, but Lucas was trying to be strong for both of them.

I loved how close Lucas was to his family, and would do anything for his brother's. He would help with homework, defend them when needed, set them on the right path, always be there for one-minute and the other eleventy three things that his family needed him for (you'd have to read it to understand... so sweet!). Lucas was a terrific guy and this read was truly magnificent! I cannot wait to read more Preston Boys books, Jay has won me over with this strong and close family!

Two quick teasers that touched me while reading this book!

“And that one girl?” she asks. “How did you get over that?”
“As soon as it happens, I’ll let you know.”

And so without meaning to, without wanting to, I started to fall in like with a girl who would become my best friend.
My confidant.
My courage…
…A girl who would later crush my heart and destroy me.
