EARLY REVIEW ~ Taste of Darkness by Maria V. Snyder

Taste of DarknessTitle: Taste of Darkness
Author: Maria V. Snyder
Series: Healer #3
Genre: YA Fantasy
Expected Publication: January 1st 2014 by HarlequinTeen

She's fought death and won. But how can she fight her fears?

Avry knows hardship and trouble. She fought the plague and survived. She took on King Tohon and defeated him. But now her heart-mate, Kerrick, is missing, and Avry fears he's gone forever.

But there's a more immediate threat. The Skeleton King plots to claim the Fifteen Realms for his own. With armies in disarray and the dead not staying down, Avry's healing powers are needed now more than ever.Torn between love and loyalty, Avry must choose her path carefully. For the future of her world depends on her decision.
What can I say except that Taste the Darkness was a fantastic end to the Healer series!! I am so glad that I read all three books close together so that all the details remained fresh, but they would still be good over a period of time. There was plenty of action, plotting and planning, as well as some swoon moments that kept me glued to the book until the final page!!

The whole crew has gone through so much. They have fought and survived a lot of things: the dead army, death and peace lily’s and the armies in all realms. But they all manage to come back and do it all over again. Avry is just a trooper, and never seems to stop. As soon as she solves a problem she is onto the next one and she always follows through on her promises. Kerrick has his own new challenges to deal with, but always manages to get back to Avry. The monkeys – Loren and Quaine – are as witty as ever and Flea is struggling with his own magic. Prince Ryne is as deceitful as ever and often made me cranky, but looking back at his reasons and the bigger picture, I could understand why.

Taste the Darkness tied up the series nicely. Tohon still visits Avry in her dreams, Cellina is still a threat and we even see what the Skeleton King is up to. Avry connects the dots between the toxins, lilies and the dead and I was excited to see her finally puzzle it out. I like how selfless she is too, and will put herself in danger to protect who she loves and so Ryne can win this war.

Maria V. Snyder has written another amazing series that I loved. She builds these amazing fantasy worlds with magic, war and romance that sucks me right in. She has a writing style that is easy to follow and when I was a little cloudy on details at times, she manages to fill me in. I enjoyed the alternating POV with Avry and Kerrick, as they still spend time apart. I am keen to see what Snyder has in store for us next!!

I received a copy of this book from Harlequin Australia in exchange for an honest review.

  1. I'm very happy you got to enjoy this series so much! I've always heard such good things about Maria V Snyder's writing that I'll have to read her series at some point, too. I'll probably follow your steps for this one and read the three instalments close together, they sounds very good, indeed!

  3. I love reading a series all in a row - it's so much better when you can do it that way! I still need to read the last book in the Poison Studies series, but then I'll have to pick this one up too. :-)

  18. Good lord another series I need to start. I read 300 books this year and still haven't gotten to all those I want to read. Le sigh. I need a time stopping device so I can pause the world and read or maybe a speed reading ability?
