Review ~ Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)Title: Half-Blood
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Covenant #1
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Published: October 18th 2011

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

I have been meaning to read this series for what feels like forever! I finally decided to get it from the library and I am so glad that I did! It has been a long time since I have picked up a new paranormal series and I loved how quickly I was swept away in another of Jennifer’s worlds.

In the Covenant series, we are introduced to a race created by the Gods. There are the pure-breeds, half-breeds and the daimons (who are the pures that have turned evil). It was interesting to see how these races existed in the modern world and the dangers they pose to one another.

Half-Blood is told from Alex’s POV and she is a hoot of a character. She tries to be all strong and confident on the outside, and suppresses most of her emotions so she doesn’t look weak. I loved seeing her stand up for herself, but sometimes that confidence is cockiness that always causes her to do something stupid.

This was a fantastic beginning to an exciting series, and I am slapping my forehead for not beginning it sooner. I was swept away in the entertaining story line and enjoyed learning all the ins and outs of the world. There are a lot of characters that I love and I can’t wait to see more of: Aiden, Seth and Caleb to name a few. There were plenty of tough and emotional challenges for Alex and the way she grew throughout this book was remarkable. A few of the twists I saw coming, but I just loved reading every minute of it and I cannot wait to start Pure
