What happens when a single mom’s four-year-old daughter falls in love with Mr. Right and she doesn’t?

Maggie Tyson’s rule: no bad boys. Her incarcerated ex-husband broke her of that attraction. Needing to escape his threats and the scrutiny of the people in her hometown, Maggie relocates to New York City. Determined to not make the same mistakes, she has a mile-long list of dos and don’ts. Unfortunately, her daughter, Cecily, doesn’t like to follow them. When Cecily wanders away from her and right into Rick Stone’s office, Maggie knows he’s the exact type she’s been trying to avoid. Can she resist him or will she succumb to his willful charm?

Rick Stone’s rule: bed them don’t wed them. Running a multi-billion dollar business doesn’t leave him with much time to do anything else, particularly with an overbearing grandfather breathing down his neck. But when a man works hard, he needs to play even harder. Voted America’s most eligible bachelor, Rick doesn’t have any problems getting women into his bed—except one.
Two auburn beauties stumble into his life.
One will break his heart.
The other—heal it.
Will he love or leave them?

"Do you have your own mile-long list of dos and don’ts for every day life and/or when writing a book?"

I think most people have an internal do and don’t list and if not, then there is an internal voice that pops up every once and a while that prods us to listen. Some may call it a sixth sense or whatever, but we all have some type of moral compass that helps us draw a line between doing something bad or choosing good.

Life is quite fascinating and the fact that we live in a nation where we get free choice, makes each day a gamble. Human nature fascinates me. It is intriguing as a writer to explore the darker side of human nature and be able to write about it, when in real life we wouldn’t ever choose bad.

That is the beauty of writing. You can let your imagination go wild and really explore topics and themes that push readers and writers psyche into the realm of, what if? As an author, I look forward to writing about topics I never thought I would.

The Hierarchy of Needs by Rebecca Grace Allen ~ Guest Post & Giveaway

The Hierarchy of Needs by Rebecca Grace Allen was released this week, and today I have a Guest Post for you. I wanted to know whether or not Rebecca had her own “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” moment. She explains how she came up with the concept behind the book. Enjoy!

Jamie Matthews is stuck in a rut. After hitting a wall with her dream career, she’s back in her hometown, living a life as monotonous as swimming laps in the neighborhood pool.

Being surrounded by her perfect brothers is a painful reminder of her failure to launch. The last bonfire of the summer is an ideal way to let off steam, especially when she runs into Dean Trescott, the playboy friend she had one hot-as-hell night with back in high school.

Since the day Dean met Jamie, he’s loved her beauty, talent, and smile that lit up the whole damn block. But dating isn’t an option. She has a bright future ahead of her, and he refuses to chain her to his—helping run the family business that’s barely staying afloat.

A “what-happens-in-Vegas” weekend was supposed to get their craving for each other out of their systems. But neither counted on the past repeating itself, drawing them together in even hotter and dirtier ways and dangling the possibility they might both be able to get exactly what they need…

Warning: A friends-to-lovers twice over story that contains some hot ’n’ heavy kissing in the waves, hair pulling, and a man who knows how to use his hands. It may also feature a few practical jokes—only the fun kind, of course.

I wish I could say I had my own “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” weekend that helped inspire Jamie and Dean. (If I did, however, anything about it would’ve had to stay in Vegas, so I wouldn’t be able to blog about it!)

Creating these two characters was actually a very different experience for me. Most of my characters pop into my head with the hint of a storyline already in place, but the two of them were a bit of a mystery to me. All throughout writing The Duality Principle, Jamie and Dean were just outside of my grasp. It felt like hanging out with really interesting people at a party but not getting to spend enough time with them.

The decision to bring them to life happened in a side note between my editor and me during one of our revisions. Christa’s suggestion of “let’s write these two next” was the catalyst that had me figuring out who these two were. I already knew they’d known each other since high school, and that Jamie was a little bit wild. The baby of her family with three older brothers, she was a fashion-obsessed partier who loved playing practical jokes. Dean worked for his father, enjoyed downtime at the beach with his truck and a six pack, and was an incredibly loyal friend. The two of them were comfortable around each other, flirted easily, even got a little handsy at times, but their interactions suggested that there was more under the surface. A kind of buzzing attraction that at one time had zinged to life and then got quickly shorted out. I knew something out of their control was needed in order to bring them together, and thus Jamie’s brother’s wedding scene was born. It’s my favorite scene in the book, so here’s a little snippet for you:

“Dean sought her out in the crowded ballroom, locating her in the middle of the dance floor. She was laughing loudly, her head thrown back like she was on a roller coaster. She’d downed a couple of beers and more than her fair share of champagne, but what the hell. It was a party. And Jamie having fun was always a sight to be seen.
Not to mention her body in that dress. Jesus.
Short. Tight. A dark blue color that set off her skin perfectly, and fuck if it didn’t highlight the tight circle of her waist and those badass arms. He’d wanted to find a corner to hide her in and see how good that dress looked in a puddle around her feet.”

From there it was figuring how they got from A to B: where the wedding scene figured within the rest of the book, what happened after that even when they were sure they couldn’t be together, and how they got their ‘happily ever after’ in the end. I had a lot of fun figuring these two out, and I hope you enjoy reading them!
Rebecca Grace holds a Bachelor of Arts in English with a double concentration in Creative Writing and Literary Comparison, which seemed like a good idea at the time. After stumbling through careers in entertainment, publishing, law and teaching, she’s returned to her first love: writing. A self-admitted caffeine addict and gym rat, she currently lives in upstate New York with her husband, two parakeets, and a cat with a very unusual foot fetish.

Book Description

Bartender and songwriter Kelli Foster had always kept her eyes trained on the dream of stardom as a means to escape her small-town life. That focus blinded her to threat right in front of her: a bar patron who lulls her into a false sense of security and abducts her for a shadowy organization, taking her to a cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Desperate to escape and return to the world she thought she knew, Kelli bides her time, complying with her captors as they force her into a dream world where she must unravel the meaning of a song to free a hostage trapped inside a tree. Failure to free the hostage means only one thing: death, for her and the hostage.

Joined by an important test subject whose sanity unravels almost from the start, Kelli attempts to free them both. When the escape fails, Kelli’s life becomes even more difficult, and she learns that her assumptions about her life – and the world itself – could all be false. As events spiral out of control, Kelli finds herself caught in a battle between godlike beings that hold her fate, and that of the entire Organization, in their hands.

Guest Post

Thanks for joining me on the Room 3 Spring 2013 Promotional Tour. Very few of us writers are crazy about jumping onto the promotional wagon; we see it as something of a necessary evil to make sure that you, the readers, know that our novels exist and might be worth some of your precious time. I’m probably not much different in that respect, but I also feel that my novel, and the story surrounding its creation, has some real emotional depth to offer a reader.

Room 3 has been a labor of love from the beginning. The story has its roots deep in concepts that made me uneasy even in my childhood – the idea that others could somehow “hijack” your mind or your body for their own purposes. Stories like Alien, The Shining, and Videodrome use these horrors to stunning effect, and I had always hoped to be able to give my own spin on the concept.

It’s not an easy one to write, however; the very concept is rooted in an intensely personal idea of self, which means that a storyteller must work hard to establish a person within his or her own skin. Would, say, The Shining be nearly as effective if we didn’t have a sense of Jack Torrance as a man with a flawed psychology hoping to make good? I think that awareness of Jack’s inner emotional landscape lends itself to the horror that we then witness through his child’s eyes.

In this way, a tale such as Room 3 lives and dies based on the emotional landscape of a handful of characters. My first novel, The Corridors of the Dead, may have been effective at putting a reader in touch with the core of a woman on the cusp of an important transformation, but it also worked from an action-based premise. It seems a little easier to show such a change when so much of the story is externally-driven; you can show how a character’s reaction to changing scenery and circumstance reflects his or her inner drives and transformation.

Room 3 demanded something a little different. I had to tap into that afore-mentioned emotional landscape. I had to understand and live Kelli Foster’s emotional path. I had to comprehend what it meant to go from being a scared, trapped person who transformed into a hardened, bitter veteran of circumstance. I then had to make a leap from that closed-off person to learning to trust and love again.
It seemed a tall order, and I despaired at times on whether I could ever get it right. The answer came to me slowly: tap into circumstances that I had experienced. Look at my own path from one place to another, for my own life has moved in similar circles. This was the key to understanding Kelli and not only sharing but affirming my own experiences.

Viewed that way, you can see Room 3 as a chronicle not only of a character’s transformation but also of my transformation and learning experience. It means a lot to me to be able to share that with other people, and I hope that you can enjoy reading the story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Excerpt
This is the first time we see one of Kelli’s visions, following an injection of the mysterious hallucinogen.

Something rustled in the corn. I whirled, but I knew who it would be before she even appeared. She always found me. “Mimi?”

A little girl appeared from between the rows, pushing the bottoms of the stalks apart. She had blue eyes, dark brown hair, and a smile that could just melt your heart – the kind of smile that never, ever survives into adulthood.

She cocked her head. “How’d you know my name?”

She always asked me that.

“We’ve met, but I’ve told you that before, too.”

She put her hands on her little hips. “How come I don’t remember you?”

“I think it’s this place. It always makes you forget.”

“I don’t like that.”

I looked around. “I don’t like it much, either. But don’t worry about it. I’m here.”

Wheels turned in her head. “But why are you here?”

No clue how to answer that one. “You’re looking for something, right?”

She nodded.

I leaned down, putting my hands on my knees. “What are you looking for, sweetheart?” I already knew the answer, but this had gone down a certain path forever, and the show had to go on.

She rubbed her eyes. “Cici’s gone. I can’t find her.”

Cici. The girl forever searched for Cici. I had no idea if she even existed. “Now where did you last see your sister?” I said.

Her eyes widened, like I’d shown her the secret of the universe. “We did meet, didn’t we, that’s how you know about Cici?”

I nodded. “Where did you see her last?” Knew the answer to this one, too.

She pointed over my shoulder. “There.”

I knew what I’d see when I turned. I’d seen it so many times that I’d even started to see it in my dreams. It didn’t matter, though. Every single time I turned to gaze on it, it knocked me on my proverbial butt: an enormous, gnarled tree, soaring up into the sky. This wasn’t just any tree, though. Somebody had carved a wooden organ out of the trunk, with two levels of wooden keys and wooden pipes rising out of the higher reaches.

The largest keyhole you’ve ever seen had been connected to that organ, its details carved right into the trunk, between the keys and the pipes.

“She’s locked in there, isn’t she?”

Guest Post

A bit of background on Arcadia Falls

Hi! Thank you so much for having me on your blog today. I’m super excited about The Arcadia Falls Chronicles, which you are showcasing today. The Arcadia Falls Chronicles is the continuation of The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter. I gave it a different series name so that I could venture into other characters story lines and have more room to work with as far as world building with my characters.

The name, Arcadia, is actually a Greek name which has various meanings. In my research I’ve found that it means peaceful place, a paradise, adventuresome and more. It is also the name of mountainous region in Greece which is considered to be a happy place, a place of refuge and peace.

I chose Arcadia for the name of this series because my main Character, Chloe Kallistrate, is descended from the ancient Greek line of Hunters. The bloodlines and family heritage in my books play a very big part. Chloe, actually means ‘Green Shoot’ in ancient Greek and her last name Kallistrate means ‘Beautiful Army’ Which makes perfect sense because the Hunter line was created by a warrior angel sent down to eradicate the evil of vampires from the earth while on earth he met a warrior woman who was a demi-god and from this union, the Hunter line was born.

The demi-god woman was Sostrate, which means ‘Safe Army’ and she also plays a part in The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter series, as well as Arcadia Falls. There is so much more on the history and origins of the characters in the books.

I love mythology as well as vampires and those who hunt them, so it has been fantastic to play with this story line.

I also plan on writing one of the characters stories which will take place in Greece and we will get to see some more mythological creatures when I get around to that.

Characters and their back stories mean so much in writing. I really feel, as a writer, that if I can’t give the character their own backstory before beginning the book, that the whole book will lack depth and meaning. The characters will too, if they are neglected in this manner. So, it really means a lot to me to give them their own stories, even the really minor characters.
Thank you so much for having me on and I hope you enjoyed this little tid bit of history on the books.

Excerpt

Christina turned me around so I could look in the mirror.
"You look like you’re five years older now, at the very least."
She packed all her things into her bag. She had changed, too, and now her outfit consisted of a tight black dress with short sleeves and lots of zippers. Surprisingly, it did not look as slutty as I thought it might: One zipper for the whole dress and two pocket zippers on the hips, along with two pocket zippers on the breasts. She had on a pair of insanely tall high-heeled black boots. Her normally straight dark hair was done in full, bouncing curls.
Alice, who had picked out a blue-jean skirt and a shimmery white tank top that hung loose down over her hips, eyed Christina curiously. "How can you wear heels all the time? Isn’t it hard to fight with them on?"
Christina zipped her bag shut. "Nope."
"Well, where do you keep your weapons?"
With a slightly annoyed tilt of her head, Christina turned to face Alice and lifted her skirt to show us her thighs.
"First of all, I have these."
She had a knife, sheathed and strapped to each thigh.
"Then there are the guns, knives and pepper spray in my bag, and this," she reached into her boot and extracted another large knife. "There is always a place to keep a weapon. Hunter Girl 101."
