Review ~ Crown of Midnight by Sarah J Maas

Title: Crown of Midnight
Author: Sarah J Maas
Series: Throne of Glass #2
Genre: YA Fantasy
Published: August 15th 2013 (August 27th US)

Eighteen-year-old Celaena Sardothien is bold, daring and beautiful – the perfect seductress and the greatest assassin her world has ever known. But though she won the King’s contest and became his champion, Celaena has been granted neither her liberty nor the freedom to follow her heart. The slavery of the suffocating salt mines of Endovier that scarred her past is nothing compared to a life bound to her darkest enemy, a king whose rule is so dark and evil it is near impossible to defy. Celaena faces a choice that is tearing her heart to pieces: kill in cold blood for a man she hates, or risk sentencing those she loves to death. Celaena must decide what she will fight for: survival, love or the future of a kingdom. Because an assassin cannot have it all . . . And trying to may just destroy her.

Love or loathe Celaena, she will slice open your heart with her dagger and leave you bleeding long after the last page of the highly anticipated sequel in what is undeniably THE hottest new fantasy series.

I love books that have plenty of action and I really fell into the World Sarah J Maas created in the first book, Throne of Glass, where we first met the Assassin, Celaena and she had to battle her way through to become the Kings Champion. In this book, Crown of Midnight, Celaena has taken on her role and is busy doing the King’s bidding and adjusting to the world she now lives in.

Celaena is a great character and seeing the person that she is now is fantastic, considering all that she has been through. She is a very tough person, well, being a trained assassin you would hope so, and she really can hold her own. She also appears to have settled down and does things normal girls should do, shop, hang with friends and go for runs. Whilst reading, I felt that Celaena was holding back and I had my own suspicions as to what her secrets were, and along the way I pieced a few things together and had my fingers crossed!!

The relationships between Celaena, Dorian and Chaol have changed a lot since the first book and it was interesting as to the direction things went between them in this book. I really like both guys so I was on the fence about which one of them should hook up with her, so I was happy how things went between them. Things are changing for Dorian and he is not sure who to turn to for advice. He is becoming his own man and I was happy to see him step up and voice his opinion where needed. Chaol is as lovable as ever and is very committed to his role of Head of the Guard. But the little assassin has managed to get under his skin, and he does some very sweet things!! We also see Nehemia again and she plays an important role in this book and circumstances around her set things in motion… amazing!!

The story is told in two parts and the plot literally explodes at the end of the first part and I was on the edge of my seat. We get to see the real assassin at work and I was captivated! I love that sneaky side of her and the zone she gets in when at work! Just awesome!!! Again, Sarah J Maas sucked me into her world of Kings, dark magic and the Fae. Some of the scenes are gruesome and graphic, but it sucked me in even more!! We learn so much about the world in this book and why the world is the way it is. And that ending….. great twists, it opened up the plot further for the next book! I am addicted to this series and I can’t believe I have to wait a whole year for the next book!!

I received a copy of this book from Bloomsbury Publishing AUS in exchange for an honest review.
