Release Day Review ~ The Seek by Ros Baxter

Title: The Seek
Author: Ros Baxter
Series: New Earth #2
Genre: Sci-Fi Romance
Published: November 22nd 2014

From the talented and versatile Ros Baxter comes the first full-length novel in her sexy, engaging, groundbreaking SF Romance series.

When everything else is gone, all you have is hope.

The year is 2098, and the people of New Earth have been homeless for seventeen years. Ruled by a mysterious Council and adrift in a fleet of space stations, their sole mission is to survive long enough to find a new home. They call it The Seek.

Kyntura is the first and only female Avenger — one of the secret, separate elite who stand on the frontline between the refugees of Earth and a universe that would do them harm. For Kyn, fight and pain are the only things that drive out memories of the Apocalypse...and of the boy she left behind when she enlisted. But a young recruit called Mirren and a deadly mission will bring her face to face with all she has tried to forget.

As she leads a squad of Avengers in The Seek, Kyntura will have to face her demons — and the boy whose heart she broke a decade before — to confront the truth about New Earth and save the future of humanity.

What can I saw but WOW!! I have read a few of Ros Baxter’s books and this is now my favourite!! Set in the future, where humans have been banished from Earth and are in search of a new planet, The Seek is packed with action and suspense, with some sweet romantic moments tied into one remarkable storyline.

Kyn (Kyntura) trains the Avengers; she’s hard, ruthless and pushes every single one of her students to their limits. These Avengers are a futuristic military team, sent into dangerous situations and must complete their missions, protect those that accompany them as well as themselves. She has seen the dangers first hand and carries her share of battle scars, not all of which are visible.

I just loved Kyn; she comes across all tough and cruel, but she does it so her students understand how hard it will be when they go out on their first mission. There were a couple of times that she let her guard down, and it was interesting to see this softer side to her. But when she is focused, she sure is a girl you never want to cross. She tries to keep everyone at a distance, but she soon realises that fate has its own ideas.

There were a number of characters that were introduced that I liked too. Krysto was able to get under her skin and draw hot passion from Kyn. Kendis was always amusing and he was a bit of a smart-ass student that soon learned respect for Kyn. Mirren is a new student of Kyn’s and she was able to connect with her as they both have lost so much. Tabi and Asha I met in White Christmas, and I was excited to see the couple again. And then there was Symon… that first love, so much different and harder since they parted ways.

While reading The Seek, I could just imagine myself in this big spaceship (something like the Starship Enterprise) working, training and occasionally having down time. There were missions to be completed, and setting off in smaller crafts (like the The Millennium Falcon) to get the job done. There were a few battles carried out, on the ship and on land, as they cross paths with other life forms in the universe.

I love how Ros pieced this story together. It was told in the third person pov, in the present, but there were glimpses into Kyn’s past as well, which gave greater depth to her story. I was able to connect with Kyn and this universe quite easily, and it may be because of the sci-fi movies that I watched with my dad growing up. I felt like I was right there and I was quickly flicking the pages to see what happened next. I am extremely keen to get my hands on the next book to see what Kyn and her team do next!

White Christmas is a free novella and a fantastic introduction to the series. It is NOT a must read before The Seek.

  3. Gah Naomi! Every time I read one of your reviews, I add a new book (or a whole series) to my Goodreads shelves! The same thing happened right now :) But Seek sounds really good! A strong character like Kyn is exactly the kind I love reading about, so it's not my fault I can't resist, right?
    I hope you're having a great weekend.
