Captivate Me (Book One: The Captivated Series)Title: Captivate Me
Author: S.J. Pierce
Series: Captivated #1
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Published: April 1st 2014

“My mom had always told me – when you meet “the one”, you’ll know; they’ll captivate your heart the moment you lay eyes on them. I had always wondered, though, if my mom’s words of wisdom were finite – if they applied to everyone. Maybe those who had found their one great love were the lucky few, and maybe the rest of us would have to settle for less than earth-shattering.”

Seventeen-year-old Kat Walsh is a Gifted – a human with paranormal abilities. With her mom a former Angel and her dad a dream prophet, it’s always been in her genetic make-up to be extraordinary. Unfortunately for her, the world can’t handle the strange or unusual. So when she slips up and uses her powers at her high school in Ireland, the entire student body treats her like a freak – even the ones she thought were her closest friends.

Broken, but hopeful for a fresh start, she allows her parents to enroll her in a boarding school buried deep within the forests of a small Colorado town. At Midland Pines, School for the Gifted, she feels as though she can finally be herself; she makes new friends and even has the attention of the most popular guy in school – Levi. Everything feels normal again… or does it?

Not long after her arrival, weird dreams of an alluring boy whom she’s never met surface during the night, and the eerie, shadowy trees encircling their school seem to call to her. As these disturbing, yet enticing developments intensify, other bizarre occurrences happen – students and staff turn up missing, and mystery visitors leave gifts while she sleeps. With all of these other things vying for her attention, a desperate Levi has to fight even harder to keep her interest. But with the dreams of the attractive boy slowly captivating her heart, Kat has to make a choice – will she settle for ‘great’ Levi, or will she search for her elusive dream visitor, possibly stumbling across ‘amazing?’

From the author of the Alyx Rayer Chronicles, comes a refreshingly different Young Adult series with plenty of love, suspense, and a new take on the Paranormal.

Recommended for readers 16 and up due to mature content.
The Alyx Rayer Chronicles was my first introduction into S.J. Pierce’s writing, so I was keen to see what she had created next!! She did not let me down one bit and I was quickly thrown into a familiar world with all new characters.

If you have not read the Alyx Rayer Chronicles, don't worry. This series is focused on a daughter of some of the characters from that series. But other than phone conversations, they don’t play a big part in this book. Captivate Me is set in the country, at a school for kids with special powers!! I am a fan of books set around schools, so I knew I’d enjoy this one… but the special powers really had me intrigued!!

Kat wound up in the school because she used her power in the real world and was basically shunned by the people she saw every day. Going to a new school was hard at first, but she made friends quickly. All her new friends have powers too, so it makes it easier to fit in: telekinesis, shape shifting and elemental powers are just the beginning. But when people start disappearing from the school, things become tense.

Kat was a girl that I liked almost immediately. She is sweet, kind and wants to fit in. She cares for those around her and seems to notice more than what most people do. She enjoys school and spends a lot of time with her friends, working on her powers and she is passionate about painting. But her inquisitive nature has her heading to the woods where she meets someone who will change her life forever.

There were a lot of characters that I liked in this book. We met most of them briefly, but no matter what, they will support each other. There are a couple of love interests for Kat but it doesn’t really turn into a big love triangle. The mystery behind the missing people had me guessing at every turn and I enjoyed the twists thrown in along the way.

This book was written in the 1st person perspective which is a change from the original series, and I think I connected with the main character more this time because the book is written that way. S.J. Pierce did a fantastic job weaving Kat’s story and I am looking forward to see where things go now. If you are looking for a fresh change in the YA fantasy/paranormal genre, definitely give this series a whirl!!
