It's been a long time since I've read one of Bella Forrest's books, so when I saw this brand new series from her I HAD to get on board! It's the start of a new, exciting series and I want more NOW!
Title: The Gender Game
Author: Bella Forrest
Series: The Gender Game #1

A toxic river divides nineteen-year-old Violet Bates's world by gender.
Women rule the East. Men rule the West.

Ever since the death of her mother, Violet's life has been shadowed by bad luck. Already a prisoner to her own nation, now after two unfortunate incidents resulting in womanslaughter, she has been sentenced to death.
But one decision could save her life.
One decision to enter the kingdom of Patrus, where men rule and women submit.
Everything about the patriarchy defies Violet's identity, but she must sacrifice many things if she wishes to survive the forbidden kingdom... including forbidden love.

The Gender Game was an exciting and action packed beginning to a new series by Bella Forrest. She has created a whole new world where men and women coexist on both sides of the river, but one sex is dominant; Women rule Matrus, and on the other side of the river, the Men rule Patrus.
Violet hasn't been a free woman for a long time, and it was sad to see what she had been through and lost. She had no chances left to survive and had to accept a mission to retrieve an artefact for her kingdom or she would die. When she crossed the river she adjusted well to her new surroundings and immediately jumped into the mission. I could see that she was a driven young woman, willing to do anything to succeed. Although she tried to remain under the radar, she didn't blend in as well as she hoped and soon caught the eye of Viggo, a Patrus Warden and the chief co-ordinator, and also some other dangerous people.
I loved the world building to this story; learning what Violet had been through, how each kingdom operated and how harsh both societies were. I enjoyed the plotting and planning that went on throughout the book, which lead to a lot of action that had me glued to the pages. There were a couple of secondary storylines that opened my eyes to the difficulties in Patrus and that not everything was the way it seemed.
I was introduced to a lot of characters from both countries, and I was unsure of the intentions of just about everyone. Lee was quick to take Violet in and showed her what needed to be done. She also formed a friendship with Viggo and they spent a lot of time together, helping one another when they could. Viggo could see that she wasn't adjusting to his world and that she was more independent than she should be.
I felt at times that things fell into place too easily; Violet got away with her disguise, getting Viggo to watch over Violet was too simple, and the whole mission seemed a bit off. By the time I got to the end of the book, some questions were answered, but I have a heap of new questions I need answers too. I need to see how it's all going to unfold and who is actually on the good side. Bella Forrest has sucked me in and hooked me to this new series, with it's captivating storyline and the dangerous world. There was a touch of romance, and I am keen to see it develop further!

This is a moment where Violet was questioning what she knew.
"Do you feel like you belong in Patrus?" I asked him in almost a whisper.
Viggo furrowed his brows. "I s'pose I don't really understand the question. I was born and raised here. I am a man."
I didn't really understand the question either. I’d been born and raised in Matrus. I was a woman. Matrus was where I belonged. Matrus was my home…
"I guess I just wonder what happens to someone who doesn't feel they belong on either side of the river.”
Viggo didn't have an answer to that one.
