The long-awaited sequel to Chaos Born takes us back into the Applecross, where Lora faces increasing threats to her survival and her chance at love.
Lora Blackgoat — mercenary and smuggler — has only just recovered from the last threat on her life and hasn’t even begun to sort out the mess of having both a nephilim warrior and a reborn hellspawn as potential lovers. Work should be a refuge, but a job finding missing persons puts her in the crosshairs of a violent gang and a merchant with a taste for blood sport.
Reluctantly, Lora turns to the two men in her life for help. Roman — the nephilim — professes to be her soul mate and turns to her when he feels the darkness of nephilim madness descending. But though Lora is drawn to Roman, it is Seth, ex-lover and reborn hellspawn, who Lora must ultimately ask to protect those she loves. Can she trust Seth to save Roman and her adoptive family, or will this be a fatal mistake?
For those who don’t know but I really enjoyed Chaos Born, the first book in this series and it was definitely followed by a solid second book!! I was completely sucked into The Weald all over again. There is action galore, danger at every turn and frustration at times as well. But as usual, Lora, the unlikely heroine, stumbles, fights, hexes and shoots her way through to the very end. She follows her first instinct and somehow she manages to slip through to get her job done.
Lora is still building a less than stellar reputation, but she manages to go to the next job without hesitation. She wants to change her reputation and prove that she can do her job without complications. She is running two cases: a bodyguard job and a missing persons. She soon realises that things are out of her hands and all hell breaks loose in Applecross.
Lora was her stunning self, still has the limp but her heart is pulling in different directions. She likes Roman but is unsure if she can trust Seth. She has growing feelings for Roman as well and is not sure what to do about it. She pushes it all aside to get her job done and will not sit back and let others do the dirty work. I love how she is willing to throw herself into danger no matter the cost and does it constantly. She always comes up with plans, which are not always good. You can never fault her loyalty but you can count on Lora and her smart-assed comments!
Rebekah Turner has a knack of sucking you into a fantasy world, with a dodgy heroine who captures your attention. She introduced some new characters who fleshed out the plot even more and I was fully immersed in this story until the final page. I’m hoping for more in this series, because Lora’s story is far from finished and it is definitely one of my favourite series to date!
I received a copy of this book from Harlequin Australia, in exchange for an honest review.

Just to let you know, the part at the top of your post where you list the title and publishing info lists the info for book #1 in the series instead of this one.
ReplyDeletehumm sounds like a great story despite some frustrations. I hope the characters continue to grow.

ReplyDeleteOkay. Yep. Gonna have to try it :) I really need to get back into UF more. I used to read it all the dang time but then migrated more into romance. Might have to be my March goal :)
