Review ~ Spark by Jennifer Ryder

Title: Spark
Author: Jennifer Ryder
Series: Spark #1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Published: February 26th 2014

Not many people know that I, Eevie Lawson, have a problem. An addiction to romance novels. I eat them for breakfast. I hide it the best I can, but I need them to breathe. It’s how I cope.

I’ve had a swag of book boyfriends, but now that I’m free from the responsibility of caring for my three younger brothers, it’s time to find one in the flesh.

In real life, no girl meets their hero on page one, or even at the end of chapter one. I should know.

My journey is real. It’s not perfect, and it sure as hell isn’t easy—but the fight for something worthwhile never is.

I picked up Spark as part of a boxset of the first three books in the series. I have thought about getting it for a while, so I snapped it up when it was on sale. Spark was a good start to the series, following Eevie’s pov, as she builds a life for herself now that she is on her own.

Eevie was a character I found easy to relate to. She was under pressure at home; taking on more than any daughter/sister should at such a young age. She found things a little difficult because she was not really sure who she was and wants to build her own life. She made mistakes along the way, but learnt from them and built great friendships which enabled her to open up. She puts on a strong front, but I could see she was struggling internally but in the end it made her a better person.

When she met Aiden, I could see that they had an instant connection, but there were circumstances that kept them apart. Eevie still had a lot of growing to do, and it wasn’t the time for Aiden. When they did get together, the passion between them was scorching and they couldn’t get enough of one another. They had hurdles too, one of which nearly broke my heart, but they were strong enough to get through it together.

Spark touches on some difficult situations which makes it a bit of an emotional journey. It is set in Australia too, which was another reason why I could relate to the book. I have only just started getting to know these characters, and I look forward to seeing more of them, because their journey is not over yet!

  12. Sounds great, Naomi! You know I love seeing characters grow and mature as they figure out their way in the world. I'm glad Eevie was such a strong character and that things seemed to have developed somewhat slowly between her and Aiden. Great review!
