Review – Unforeseen by Lauren Grimley

Title: Unforeseen
Author: Lauren Grimley
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Published: April 27th 2012

Book Description

Alex was quite sure that "gifted" was a term which delusional parents applied to their strictly average children, that vampires were gorgeous dead guys in her eighth-grade girls' novels, and "Seers" was a middle schooler's misspelling of a department store famous for power tools. Teachers, however, don't know everything, and it’s Alex’s turn to be educated.

Hoping just to clear her mind, Alex Crocker leaves work for a late night run across the small city of Bristol, Massachusetts. Instead she is dragged violently into a feud she never would have known existed. She quickly learns she’s being hunted for possessing a gift she never wanted, one that could kill her or provide her the power she’ll need to protect herself and those she cares for.

Despite her desire to maintain her independence, Alex quickly becomes tied to the Rectinatti vampires through bonds of friendship, loyalty, and most surprisingly, love. These bonds, coupled with the new knowledge that she is in grave danger are enough to make her want to stay, but it’s learning what is really at stake that drives her to fight.

My Review

When I began reading Unforeseen, in my opinion, it felt similar to another book that I have read before, but the longer I read, there were more differences and twists in the story line to give the book its own unique feel. I quickly became absorbed into the book and enjoyed the direction that the author took us with the plot.

Alex is a high school teacher, who has always had good intuition in regards to people's feelings. She is a quiet person who usually keeps to herself, and really doesn't have any friends. She has been distant with her parents for some time and lost her brothers 11 years ago. Her life is about to change dramatically when she decides to jog home after work and is pulled into a dark alley.

We are then introduced to the world of Vampires, the good coven of Vampires is the Rectinatti and the bad Coven is the Vangatti. They both have different rules that they abide by and different sources of food. Alex is abruptly thrust into this world into the Rectinatti coven after they save her. They sense something different about Alex and intend to keep her against her will until they figure it out.

I enjoyed watching Alex interact with the Vampires. She has spunk and she throws them off guard with the way she challenges all their decisions. They really don't know how to deal with humans as they have been living in their own little world for so long. Sage has his own powers and tries to help Alex discover what she is but they often clash as they are both strong minded people. Rocky is closer to Alex's age and they have a lot more in common in regards to more modern hobbies. Marcus has an attraction to Alex, but he is very old fashioned and he takes his sweet time making any moves on Alex, so being the modern girl she is tries to push him along. We also meet the Ragen (head of the coven) Darian and his mate Sarah who also have big roles in the story. Together these 5 Vampires are a close knit bunch who work together to ensure the safety of their coven.

The story unravels as we discover that there is a prophecy that is beginning to come into play and Alex is a big player in it. She needs to work with her new family and learn to control and harness her powers, as well as learning to work with other people and letting herself trust those around her to keep her safe.

I believe the author was able to create a great new twist to the Vampire story. Alex is going to be a force to reckon with and she will be interesting to watch in the next books.
