He is seeking absolution.
Flynn Caldwell has a hero complex and it’s one of the reasons he joined the New York City Fire Department. He has spent his entire professional career trying to atone for that one person he failed to save. Because, if he can do that, then perhaps he can be worthy of love again.
She is seeking escape.
Rowan Page’s life is nothing short of a disaster. Always immersed in trouble, she has only herself to depend on. She’s determined to pull herself out of this mess and make something of her life, despite the hard years she has lived on the streets of New York.
Together, they have the chance to become complete.
Flynn and Rowan’s worlds exist miles apart, but when a chance meeting brings them together, neither of them can deny the instant pull that connects them to each other. What starts as a tiny spark eventually flares into a fire so hot, it refuses to be extinguished.
For it to work, both of them will need to jump feet first into the flames to see where it takes them, despite the risk of being burned.
Off Chance is the 5th book in the Off series, but is only the second book that I have read. Even though I have missed the middle three books in the series, it was easy enough to pick up this book and dive into the world that Bennett Sawyer has created. It was a bit of an emotional ride, learning to trust and open up to another person and let down your walls.
I groaned. I couldn't help it. Guys are conditioned to involuntarily groan when a woman puts a screeching halt on our sex-capades.
Flynn… sigh… is a HOT fire-fighter!! An incident earlier in his life set him on the path that he is on today and he also takes unnecessary risks that he is constantly being reprimanded for. But he is very good at his job. I liked Flynn from the very beginning and new that I would grow to like him even more along the way. He is very kind and likes to help who he thinks are broken. Rowen comes into Flynn’s life due to his work. She is very reserved and has walls set up to keep people out. She has been like this because of the way she was raised and is determined to survive on her own. But as of late she has lost her way.
"Don't you have a scarf or something?" I ask. He gives me a look of horror and scoffs. "Real men don't wear scarfs." "Fine," I tell him. "But don't complain when your neck gets cold." "Real men never complain," he counters as he winks at me.
I loved seeing this couple interact; they strike up a fantastic friendship in the beginning, which I think is essential for a relationship. They work through the good and bad times together and their connection grows until sparks are flying. Rowen’s issues are the ones that hold them back though. There was one aspect of Rowen’s life that I thought would come back later on, but it seemed to be wrapped up early in the book.
"I've seen the way you dance. If you do that while taking your clothes off, you'll kill me. Dead."
I thought that Sawyer Bennet wove this story beautifully. She touched on some dark aspects of society and how one person was able to break free from it. The emotions that both characters had to deal with were hard too, as one is looking for love and the other just wants to know what love is. They are cute to watch when they banter and flirt with each other, but always hold back. However, there is no denying that this couple belong together, they just had to do it in their own time. And when they get together… boy is it sizzling!! The characters from the previous books play small roles in this book too, and I want to go back and read the stories that I have missed!! If you haven’t had a chance to try this series, I suggest you do so now!!
I received a copy of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review.
USA Today Best-Selling author, Sawyer Bennett, is a snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. She is married to a mobster (well, a market researcher) and they have two big, furry dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn't have many weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.
