Here’s this week’s question:
How do you handle a book you don’t like? Do you DNF or do you power through?
I have never DNF'd a book before. Authors
have put a lot of work and effort into their books so I try
to power on through the book even if I am not fully into it. I may skim over
the passages, but I always get to the end. I look for the positive things in
the book though, as I don’t like to leave negative reviews. Most of the time
there is really nothing wrong with the book, it just isn’t my kind of book.

It takes a lot for me to DNF a book, pretty much for the same reason you started. But there have been a few. Granted no more than 10, if even that. But it has happened when there's been a book that I could barely make through.

I remember one book, I literally skimmed the pages I was so not into it!! But now I am more selective with what I accept for review.
ReplyDeleteMe too!! I feel guilty if I put it down without finishing so I just keep going until it's done. Fortunately, I haven't come across too many that are like that. Most books I read I enjoy.

Never? Wow. Well, some authors put a lot of work and effort into their books. If you scan the kindle boards, you will see some real craptastic books that never went past a first draft.
ReplyDeleteBut, I agree that the majority of the time it is "just not my thing". Whether it's not my thing for the next week or ever, depends on whether I'll ever finish it.

Never? That's crazy. I have to agree that authors put in a lot of work in their books, which is why I always feel guilty DNFing. I also feel bad when I don't like a book because it's not my thing, that's not the authors fault! I always power through a book when I am given it to review, I feel like I must at least finish a book before giving a negative review!

I have DNFed maybe two books so far, but I think I'm going to try to actually do it more often... now, I never start a book if I think I won't like it, but after 50-100 pages, usually, things don't really change that much. And there are thousands of books I'd like to read :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my FF post earlier. Have a fantastic Friday, Naomi!
I try everything not to DNF a book, but there a only a few that I done that with. the first book was okay, so I decided to give the second a try, but sadly it was worse than the first and just couldn't do it. But that doesn't happen often.
ReplyDeleteGood answer. So true. That's why I try my hardest to finish or go back to it later.

I'm more likely to DNF something I bought, but a review copy yeah would be a lot less likely to set aside. Skimming is good sometimes. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's really admirable for you to power through books that you're not enjoying! I used to do that but will now put down a book (after giving it a thorough chance, of course!) if I'm not enjoying it...
ReplyDeleteNew follower via GFC - would love for you to do the same! :)

I don't like DNFing books either. I always follow through. I'm a bloglovin follower.
ReplyDeleteUsually I will give a book 50-100 pages before I DNF if I'm not enjoying it. I used to power through but I no longer have the time and it turned reading into a chore. There are too many books on my tbr pile for me to feel guilty and I'm picky about what I read, so only have 1 DNF so far!

I hate to not finish a book. It does happen occasionally though. I always give it my best effort before giving up.

I try my best to read a book I know I will enjoy, not just anything that is free!!
ReplyDeleteI try to be selective, so I can finish it.
ReplyDeleteI just can't bring myself to DNF..... or write a negative review.
ReplyDeleteIt is a hard one, I feel I owe it to the author to read till the end.
ReplyDeleteI think that if the author of a book I powered through asked me to read the second book in a series that I didn't enjoy, I would knock them back immediately, though.
ReplyDeleteYeah..... I just have to finish, you never know....
ReplyDeleteYes..... I must skim stuff, just get through at least the dialogue!! lol
ReplyDeleteI might have to take that on, but I'm not sure if I can!! lol
ReplyDeleteOh good!! Glad I'm not the only one!!
ReplyDeleteIt does feel like a chore, I agree..... I might have to change my ways!!
ReplyDeleteI know!! I hate not finishing too. But things may have to change!!
